2022 Friend of IWLA

17 Feb 2023 9:47 PM | Kristine "Sunnie" Jimenez

Ankeny, IA—The Iowa World Language Association (IWLA) is pleased to announce the 2022 Friend of IWLA has been awarded to Linda Fandel. The award presentation was held during the 2022 Iowa World Language Association Annual Conference luncheon at the Des Moines Area Community College campus in Ankeny, Iowa on Saturday October 1, 2022.

The Friend of IWLA award is meant to recognize an individual who has provided special and exceptional service or aid to the Iowa World Language Association.  Ms. Fandel stepped up to be the Department of Education’s Seal of Biliteracy representative over the past year. She worked with the IWLA board to review our current practices and gave guidance around the Seal of Biliteracy in the state of Iowa. Ms. Fandel formed a review committee for the recommendation surrounding accepted testing. She also facilitated the approval of new testing options that uphold the rigorous standards of the Seal and make it more accessible to all Iowa students, specifically those in ELL programming. At her suggestion, there was a committee created to review additional testing requests for a standardized procedure so schools can know what to expect and that guidance is regularly reviewed. She attended the DMPS Seal of biliteracy Awards Night and advocated for the Seal of Biliteracy by writing about it in the Department of Education newsletter. The IWLA board feels Linda Fandel is a deserving recipient of this award because not only is she an advocate of language education in our state, but we also consider her a friend of IWLA because of her support.
