I hope you're all off to a great start for 2016 after a good rest over break! IWLA has been working for you and we have some great upcoming events!
First, a reminder that our 2016 Conference will be held at the Coralville Marriott on October 7-8, so mark your calendar now! The theme is Keys to the World Language Classroom and the keynote speaker will be Marty Abbott, the ACTFL Executive Director. Start thinking now about a session you would like to present! We'll let you know as soon as the session proposal form is available. Have a great idea for improving teaching and learning in your classroom that just needs a little financial support? IWLA offers up to two grants for up to $500. The application and rubric are available NOW at iwla.net under Awards & Grants. We'll also be giving awards for Educator of the Year (Elementary, Secondary and Postsecondary), Distinguished Service and the Teacher of Promise award, so be thinking of a deserving colleague to nominate!
The Tête-à-Tête at the University of Iowa will be held on Saturday, February 20th. "From High-Tech to Low-Tech: Using Technology in ALL World Language Contexts". It is from9AM-12PM at the University of Iowa in the Lindquist Center - Teacher Leader Center. Parking is nearby and the team at University of Iowa puts on a great event!
Café Latino Professional Development Immersion Weekend will be Friday, March 4th at 6PM to Saturday, March 5th at 9PM. It will be held at Grand View University. The topic is El Amor Dominicano and the syllabus is available in the Events section of the IWLA Facebook page and here. Graduate credit is available. Some work needs to be completed before the event. Do you have foreign exchange students looking for things to do?
Please let your foreign exchange students know about the IFA HS International Weekend - Feb 19th-21st, 2016 - everything is FREE! They only need arrange for transportation to and from Iowa Falls. They will be set up with a weekend host family, meals will be covered as well as activities which will include, ice skating, bowling, a movie, social gatherings, potluck, hanging out at the activity center, the Coffee Attic, and homes of our students! Have them RSVP ASAP via e-mail to lbuss@ifacadets.net!
Looking for great opportunities for your students?
Are there students you are aware of who might have an interest in an exchange program with a family in Europe? The OSEF (Organisme de Séjours Educatifs Francophones - Association Sans But Lucratif) offers a foreign exchange opportunity for American students in France, Belgium or Spain. Suzanne Stenson O'Brien is a volunteer U.S. Coordinator who would be happy to come to you and/or present for a parent cohort if you think there is interest! They have students in France and Belgium and over 100 students in Spain who would like to exchange. OSEF is an all-volunteer organization and runs as a non-profit registered in Belgium.
